Katherine Perez Memorial Scholarship

Katherine Perez | May 29, 2000 - December 24, 2017

At 17, Katherine (Kathy) Perez was already beacon of hope in the community and a force for positive change. She had a vision to reshape the world’s perception of those who live in the Bronx by creating community projects that educate and empower youth. Kathy lived at Betances Houses and was an enthusiastic participant in the South Bronx Youth Leadership Council (YLC), through which she helped plan programs to educate the community, strengthen bonds among neighbors, and have fun together. Kathy departed on December 24, 2017, leaving behind her mother, two sisters, and many other family members, friends, and neighbors who will always remember the way she cared for people and spread her joy. She joined the South Bronx YLC because she “wanted to see change in the community, especially with teens. Teens should be doing something good, helping out those who need it most, especially the elderly,” (NYCHA Journal, May 2017). Kathy truly lived by this principle and—with kind words for everyone—she could make anyone smile. Kathy was the youngest daughter of Nytza and the late Ramón Perez, sister of Christine and Amanda. She was a senior at MS/HS 223 The Laboratory School of Finance and Technology, and had her sights set on attending Cornell University. In loving memory of Kathy, the Fund for Public Housing and Capital One have created the 2018-2019 Katherine Perez Memorial Scholarship.
